So I installed CKS:EBE 2.0 (beta 2.)and experienced the following:
1: Activation of the feature can ONLY be done on (sub)sites. In my case: with a blog wouldn't let me activate EBE, it gave me value out of range errors and 403 errors. Activation on succeeded. Also a new managed path(instead of sites I picked blogs) let me activate the feature. You have to create a Web App and a Site collection first before activation in SharePoint Admin Console. after that you can create a site collection below the first created site collection or youcan create sites by means of the front-end(not sharepoint admin console)
2.Opening the theme.master in SharePoint designer wasn't successful until I chanced the extension into something else.
3.Simply copying and pasting an entire theme directory didn't work for me. It let me to several issues which I'm not able to solve right now (every blog site I create and where I want to activate EBE gives me a file not found error, it seems sharepoint can't find the masterpage). Until now I'm not able to activate and see the EBE feature on this web app. Even uninstall didn't work :-(

1. You can activate it at the root (my blog is at the root) adn to be honest most of the development was done with blogs as the root site (I would expect it to be the other way around!).
2. I have found a bug with this, which has been fixed.
3. File not founds (to me anyway) are normally DLLs and are generally fixed with an IIS reset. (this is not the only cause though).
