Customizing EBE with XSL files. I'm a Newbie

I'm a “newbie”/novice to EBE.  I want to customize the way the blogs are presented on the home.aspx page.  For instance I want to display the blog summary followed by the blog’s comments.

I think that in order to do that, I have to work with the XSLT controls and .xsl files that get data from the SharePoint’s XML files(DataStore).  When I look at the .xsl file, I have no idea what I’m looking at. Is the code like “select="rows/row[position() > number($endPos)-10 and position() < number($endPos)+1]"/>” Java script?  Also these declarations:

<xsl:param name="IsBlogOwner" />

      <xsl:param name="RelativeUrl" />

      <xsl:param name="QSpageindex" />

      <xsl:param name="TrimPostBodyOnLists"/>. Are expanded in the xsl file like ($IsBlogOwner). But they are never assigned a value.  Are these termes predefined somewhere?

The big question is how can I learn to work with and write this kind of code?  Are their books out there that can help me? Learn by example books.
