SSN 3.0: The template you have chosen is invalid or cannot be found

I downloaded the source for SSN 3.0 portal.

I had some issues compiling the solution, but once I had installed:
Nant
AJAX.Net and AjaxPro (to get round it not finding the Microsoft.Web.Script.Serialisation method JavaScriptObjectSerializer.Serialize() and used AjaxPro.JavaScriptSerializer.Serialize())
and created the snk key for each project

I then ran the install using:
install.bat http://wss3 test@sample.com wss3\administrator "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80\web.config"

I had to modify the install.bat to point to the ssn.configuration.exe at the release folder and also move the two xml files required to the same folder as the install.bat

This all worked fine, but I get the error:

The template you have chosen is invalid or cannot be found

I've tried a few different paramter changes rerunning the install.bat but no luck.

I've searched around the web for this and have found various suggestions around it not being for correct version, not being in the safe controls list etc. but had no joy.

Can anyway suggest anything else?

I'd really like to get this working to help on this project and the CKS project. I've been a C# developer for over four years and specialised in Enterprise Content Management Systems such as TeamSite and RedDot and would really like to push WSS3.0 to it's limits.

I just uploaded the SSNv3 installation manual to see if this helps you out. The error you are encountering is not something I have seen before.

I will roll back my Virtual Machine image to base install of WSS3.0 and try again following the instructions and with the compiled version of the solution.

Thanks very much for taking the time to put that up.

Ok I created a new Virtual PC 2007 image with Windows Server 2003 R2 SP1 and installed .Net 2.0, .Net 3.0 and WSS 3.0. The ran the install.bat script as described in tutorial using the "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80\web.config" as location for web.config. I followed the steps to create a new web application and site collection but I still get the same error:

The template you have chosen is invalid or cannot be found.

I have attached a snippet of the log that has the error in it. Not sure if this is anymore help.

Thanks for your help in advance.

I know what is happening now. The templates were originally built with MOSS2007 (specifically the for Internet SKU)in mind, the home page template specifically requires MOSS. Everything else in the solution works just fine on WSS however, so use the WSP file to get access to the webparts directly. Just as an FYI, what happens when you build a template in SharePoint is that the file includes all of the pointers to whatever services were on the machine at the time. If these same services are not running on a destination machine, you will get an installation failure.

I was speaking with InfoStrat today, and I may be able to get a build created that does not require MOSS...watch this space.

Hi Abdoul,

You need 'MOSS2007 for Internet Sites' to use the installer, otherwise it will fail. This is what customers using the SSN all have. However, as I have provided the source code, you should feel free to rework it in any way you need for your environment. You will want to do customization anyway in the multi-lingual environment we discussed, so my recommendation would be to start with vanilla WSS/MOSS, and then chose the elements you need from codeplex...do not just limit yourself to the SSN bits.

Hi Jonncha!
is there any way to install SSN on MOSS 2007 Enterprise( not MOSS for Internet Sites) without rework source code ?
