Replaced by Enhanced Blog Edition page.

SharePoint's OOTB blog site template is sufficient for only the most basic blog requirements (typically confined to an intranet scenario). The following enhancements are required to make the SharePoint blog acceptable for use in an Internet facing scenario:
  • Deployable site admin template (.STP) or server admin template (.WSP)
  • Modular Theme Framework ("MTF")
  • Multiple categories/tags can be mapped to each blog entry/post
  • Name and URL fields in comments
  • Friendly URL ("FURL") for the blog's posts
  • Friendly URL for the blog's RSS feed
  • Anonymous comments that can be moderated
  • CAPTCHA field integrated into Comment form
  • Cool looking Master Page to make blog look totally unSharePoint-y
  • Tag cloud web part
  • Support for trackbacks and pingbacks
  • Blog content import
  • Protection for anonymous access to 'System Pages'. This means anonymous users cannot access /lists/.aspx, /forms/.aspx, /_layouts/*.aspx
  • MetaBlogApi working a bit better...You will need to create a Picture/Document library called Media for it to upload images.
  • TrimPostsOnLists setting

Take a look at the existing POC/demo site at http://cks.wssblogs.com.
